I've been involved in treating TMJ since the mid to late 1980s. I have earned the distinctions of holding a diplomate, the highest level of achievement in a number of the major TMJ academies. I'm a diplomate and board certified with the American Board of Oral-facial Pain and the American Board of Craniofacial Pain. I'm also a diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management, and I hold mastership, the highest level of distinction in the International College of Craniomandibular Disorders, ICCMO. I hold the highest level of achievement in all the major TMJ academies.
The reason that I took all these tests and that I achieved this was I wanted to measure my knowledge base against the leaders, my teachers and mentors, in all the different schools of thought with TMJ. There are a number of competing schools of thought in the field. It's not one that has a very distinct outline of, 'This is the way that we treat all TMJ cases.' Everybody comes in with a different presentation. The reason that I did this is I get a lot of patients who have pain, and I want to be the best equipped dentist around to be able to help them resolve their pain issues and their TMJ issues. That's led me to learn all the different techniques, and I'm still learning new ones as they come up, and to invest in the best diagnostic equipment and the best techniques available. I have all the tools in my tool belt because as you know, if you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Dr. David Miller’s advanced standing with the four major TMJ organizations means you don’t have to settle for a one-size-fits-all treatment. His expertise can help you decide which option is best for your condition:
- Anti-inflammatory medication can help your jaw relax so it may heal.
- Physical therapy can repair your injured jaw and associated muscles.
- Orthodontics and restorative work such as dental crowns can adjust your bite to provide relief.
- A dental splint is a small device you’ll wear over your teeth to shift your jaw enough to let it heal naturally.
A number of folks with TMD find that they’re experiencing teeth grinding while asleep, a condition known as bruxism. Sometimes, TMD can cause bruxism, and other times it’s the opposite — grinding puts stress on your jaw joints and leads to TMD. Bruxism wears down the enamel on your teeth, making them susceptible to sensitivity and decay. As we treat your TMJ problems, we’ll put an end to your bruxism, too.
