Facial Growth Orthodontics

Using the Anterior Growth Guidance Appliance Commonly called AGGA

Until recently, facial growth problems such as overbite, underbites and crossbite were hard to fix. Oral surgery on the jaws, with braces before and after the surgery, was required to correct these problems. The orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery were often painful and could take years to correct these bite problems. However, recent advances now provide a non-surgical correction option. Facial growth orthodontics or physiologic orthodontics allows Dr. David B. Miller to gently correct these problems in adults, teens and children without expensive and invasive jaw surgery.

Facial growth orthodontics is a new approach to moving teeth to their proper position while also addressing jaw development issues and the problems they cause.

The treatment addresses problems such as:

  • Overbites/underbites
  • Crossbites
  • TMJ Problems/Facial Pain
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Trigeminal Neuralgia
  • Sleep Apnea/Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS)
  • Bad posture
  • Premature facial aging

With a growth guidance appliance, Dr. Miller can gently restructure the upper jaw and midface, helping eliminate breathing problems, severe TMJ, and irregular facial development. If you have been told your TMJ, overbite, or underbite would require surgery to correct, Dr. Miller may be able to offer you a safe, effective, and nonsurgical solution. In Facial Growth Orthodontics, we use a device called an Anterior Growth Guidance Appliance (AGGA). The AGGA applies light pressure on the palate behind the front teeth. This light pressure stimulates the nasopalatine nerve – the nerve that runs through your palate. The light pressure stimulates development and remodeling in the patient’s entire mid-face, primarily behind the canines. Dr. David B. Miller has over 30 of experience treating TMJ, Sleep and Facial Growth problems. Dr. Miller was the first dentist in Northern California’s to provide AGGA treatment.

Is AGGA treatment right for me?

Treatment with the AGGA may benefit you, if you suffer from any of the following:

  • Have been told your TMJ will require surgery to correct
  • Had your TMJ treated with splint therapy and you want a permanent solution
  • Struggle with breathing issues
  • Have painful jaws or difficulty chewing certain foods
  • Have an asymmetrical facial structure
  • Have headaches or migraines
  • Have painful jaws or difficulty chewing certain foods
  • Have an asymmetrical facial structure
  • Have headaches or migraines

The best way to find out if you can be helped with AGGA is through a thorough evaluation of your facial and jaw structure with Dr. Miller. During this evaluation, Dr. Miller will listen to your concerns, evaluate your symptoms, and examine your face and jaw. After the examination, Dr. Miller will discuss his finds, so together you can determine if AGGA is right for you.
