A Healthy Smile Might Help Your Kids In Class
Parents always want the best for their children. And as a parent, you know that a good education can help your daughter or son achieve their dreams when they become an adult.
Poor oral health could get in the way of their education. At Advanced Dental Concepts, we want to help your kids keep their focus on their classwork by keeping their smiles healthy and their teeth free from cavities.
With the start of school just around the corner, we hope your family has had a checkup recently. If not, contact our Roseville, CA dental office today to schedule a dental cleaning and exam. Call us at 916-945-9985.
Can Tooth Decay Hurt Your Kids’ Grades?
This is a question the Children’s Dental Health Project looked at recently. They compiled information from multiple studies, including some here in California. The general conclusion is that children have a better chance of succeeding in school.
Here are some particulars:
- In a survey of Los Angeles area elementary students, one-third of absences from school could be attributed to dental problems. This fits with a report from the American Dental Association that children across the United States miss more than 51 million hours of school each year due to oral health issues.
- Students who reported having a recent toothache were four times as likely to have lower grades than their peers.
- And roughly 1 in 7 students 12 years and under in another reported having a toothache in the previous six months.
Will keeping your kids cavity- and gum disease-free guarantee that they will do well in school? No, but having those problems can be an obstacle to their ability to stay focused.
Preventive Care is Always the Best Option
The best way to fight cavities is to stop them before they can start.
This is why we encourage everyone in your family to brush and floss daily. Brushing your teeth can remove bacteria and plaque from most of the surfaces of your teeth. Flossing is how you remove bacteria, plaque, and small food particles from between your teeth and below your gumline.
Even so, more than half of kids will have at least one cavity by the time they turn 11 years old. It probably won’t surprise you to know that kids don’t always brush like they should. (The same is true for adults, but that’s another blog post.)
Knowing this, professional cleanings can be invaluable when it comes to removing plaque and tartar buildup before cavities form. And if your child does have a cavity, we would much rather do something about it today before it can lead to a painful tooth infection.
While you are here, you also can ask about dental sealants. This is a like getting armor for your kids teeth. The ADA has found that sealants can reduce children’s risk of getting cavities in their molars (the big teeth in the back of the mouth) by 80 percent.
